5 Reasons to Upgrade Your Kitchen

If you invest in a home for any length of time, then you know that eventually you will have to face a common project among homeowners. That thing is upgrading with a whole kitchen remodeling project.

Remodeling your kitchen can add value to your home. Even if your family just makes a few slight changes like refacing the cabinet doors or switching out the old appliances for new Energy Star® models, then it can have a big impact on the room overall. Those small changes can take your kitchen from bland to brilliant.

But how do you know it is time to remodel your kitchen? Fortunately there are some signs that you might recognize. Even if you are not experiencing them right now, if you have a growing family, for example, then you might anticipate that they will happen in the near future. These reasons for remodeling a kitchen could include:

1. Your kitchen no longer meets the needs of your family.

The times, they are a-changing, and so are the needs of your family. Maybe your family grew since you bought your home. Maybe some children left for college or their own apartments and now your kitchen is too large.

2. Because renovations have never been easier.

A generation ago, renovating your kitchen practically meant moving the family to a hotel until everything was finished. If you did stay in your house, then it meant living off delivery and fast food for weeks on end, possibly longer. Now you can arrange to have your kitchen upgraded in a short amount of time.

3. Your kitchen is outdated with styles from the 1980s or earlier.

Although the retro designs of past decades were chic in their time periods, keeping them around can make your home look outdated. You probably do not dress in bell bottom pants and platform heels while cooking meals for your family, so why would you tolerate one more day of mustard yellow appliances or olive green countertops?

4. The price of renovating a kitchen has never been more economical.

Regardless of your income or expenses, you have a budget for renovating your kitchen. In the past the estimate was shocking in a negative way. However in today’s society the price of home renovations is shocking for other reasons. New materials have never been more reasonably priced. You can have hardwood cabinets, marble counters, and new appliances on a reasonable budget.

5. You need to update the plumbing or electric.

As homes age, they need to be maintained. Sometimes this means updating the electrical or plumbing systems so that they do not pose hazards to your family. If these problems occur in the kitchen, then sometimes it is a better idea to go ahead and renovate the entire room while you have to tear out things to get to the plumbing and electric anyway.

6. The state of your kitchen is bordering on unsafe.

If your kitchen is falling apart and you are suffering from cracked tiles, loose cabinet drawers and doors, or torn linoleum flooring, then you might consider renovating the entire room in one shot. These factors are not only unsightly, they are also unsafe because they could cause accidents which could land you or a family member in the emergency room.

7. You want to increase the value of your home.

One of the quickest and most economical ways to increase the value of your family’s home is to renovate the kitchen. When the kitchen looks brand new, then it helps win over potential buyers to the idea of buying your home for a price close to what you are asking on the real estate market.

8. There are energy saving options you want to add.

Sometimes you want to renovate to save energy. For example, you might switch out your old appliances for new Energy Star® models. You might want to add skylights to take advantage of natural sunlight, or a solar water heater to cut your utility bill. These measures, however also have less of an impact on the environment.

No matter what your reason for wanting to renovate your kitchen, as you can see there is never a better time to tackle a renovation project. Renovating your kitchen can help you save money, make better connections with your family, and help the environment. Even though your reason may be different than someone else’s, renovating your kitchen can only heap benefits on yourself and everyone around you.
